Visiting: Pamukkale, Hierapolis

Duration: 11 hours

As you walk out of Kusadasi Harbour, please look for a guide holding your name placard. Your professional local guide is taking you about 3 hours inland today to visit one of the greatest sights throughout all of Turkey – the “Cotton Cliffs” of Pamukkale and the ruins of Hierapolis.

Pamukkale
Pamukkale is a World Heritage listed site. Over many years the water springs in the area have cascaded down the mountain to form what you see today. The water is high in minerals, chalk and limestone, making Pamukkale's white scenery you see today. In Turkish, Pamukkale literally means 'Cotton Castle', hence the nickname it is given. Although most of the travertines are now protected from being walked on and swum in, you can still wander along certain roped off areas and get into some allocated travertines. You will also have some free time to visit the pools or wander off on your own.

Hierapolis
Hierapolis' ancient ruins are found on top of Pamukkale and are also listed as a World Heritage Site. Pamukkale was once used in ancient times, back in the 2nd century, as a spa retreat where people came to cure ailments. Hierapolis then became a popular place to retire to and see out the last years of your life. The ruins are quite spread out, but there is time to visit the major attractions. The Roman built amphitheatre is said to be one of the steepest in the world and still in amazing condition.
